run for the roses: derby wedding inspiration board

Whether or not you tuned in to see Orb slosh through the mud for the win last weekend, there’s a lot to love about the Kentucky Derby — and it’s not all about the ponies! Derby fashion has been a highlight of the season since Churchill Downs opened in 1875, attracting wagering ladies with hats and parasols and gentlemen in stylish suits. The tradition continues and today “derby hats” are bought at a premium, sourced throughout the year to complement grandstand ensembles.  In the case of hats, bigger is better! Here are some of our favorites from this year’s collection of fabulous finery!

There are many traditions surrounding the Race for the Roses and we think a Derby-themed wedding would be so much fun. We aren’t huge fans of “themed” weddings per se… why would a bride need a bow & arrow… but giving a “nod” to a theme or concept is a great way to make your wedding unique. Here are some of our favorite ways to incorporate the Derby into your big day!

1. The Derby has been around for decades, and vintage tablesettings are a great way to go back in time. Check out this mis-matched china via Something Borrowed Vintage in Norwalk.

2. It goes without saying, but having a Mint Julep as one of your signature drinks is a must. They’re refreshing {recipe here} and look lovely in a pewter julep cup.

3. Want your guests to sip out of something more modern? Check out these tea glasses with metal cuffs by Williams-Sonoma.

4. Peplum is a trend that’s here to stay, and this classic beauty by Alvina Valenta would look lovely with a custom cap. We love the strong lines, subtle sparkle and structured bodice from the Fall 2012 Collection; Style AV9251.

5. Guys can have fun too! This sweet gold & black horse tie clip from Etsy is a darling accent to the theme.

6. Vintage equestrian invitation stamps. Need we say more?

7. If you can’t show off your own Throughbred, why not feature your precious pup! Add a sweet floral crown or necklace as a nod to the winner’s circle rose garland.

8. No Derby wedding would be complete without a splendid derby hat! This Etsy stunner could complete your rehearsal look or top the locks of your MIL-to-be.
